FIELD NOTE

The sunset fixed nothing

I love sunsets.

Always have.

Which works out rather well, considering I currently live in a van and spend a considerable amount of time near the coast.

A few days ago, I was having one of those days.

The kind where I start questioning pretty much everything.

Am I doing the right thing? Is any of this going to work? Should I be doing something more sensible? What exactly is the plan here?

All very valid questions.

Especially when I don’t have the answers.

I’d spent most of the day going around in circles in my own head.

Then, in the evening, I went to watch the sunset.

And it was beautiful.

Not just quite nice. Properly beautiful.

I sat there for a while.

And somewhere between the sun starting to disappear and it getting dark, I felt better.

A lot better, actually.

Which is ridiculous when you think about it.

Nothing had changed.

I still didn’t have the answers.

My business ideas hadn’t suddenly become profitable. Nobody had offered me a brilliant consulting assignment. I hadn’t worked out what I was doing with the next few months.

The sun had simply gone down.

Something it does every day.

And yet.

I went back to Petal feeling considerably more optimistic about everything.

Same life. Same questions. Same questionable decisions.

Different brain.

I’m not suggesting sunsets are a solution to life’s problems.

Although I do seem to be treating them as one.

And so far, they’re doing a surprisingly good job.
