Building my website reminds me quite a lot of building Petal.
Both started with a reasonably clear idea of what I wanted.
Both became considerably more complicated once I actually started.
With Petal, it was the layout. Then the kitchen, the cupboards, the colours, lighting. And about 400 small details nobody else would probably notice.
With the website, it’s the layout. Then the colours, the fonts, the spacing. And about 400 small details nobody else would probably notice.
Familiar.
I spent quite a long time building Petal. Measuring things, making things, changing things I’d already made because I’d thought of something better.
Sometimes discovering that something I’d spent three days working on could have been done in twenty minutes.
The website is seems to be going the same way.
Last week I found myself editing CSS.
I’ve been involved in building quite a few websites over the years.
I’ve just generally had other people to do the CSS.
Apparently, those people are me now.
And just like Petal, every time I think the website is finished, I spot something else.
A button could move slightly to the left, a colour isn’t quite right, a page looks lovely until I open it on my phone.
Back to work.
The difference is that Petal eventually had to be finished enough to drive away in.
The website doesn’t have that particular deadline.
Unfortunate.
I do like making things, though. Even the bits where I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing and spend an hour finding out.
So I keep changing things.
Neither project has been very efficient.
Both have taken longer than expected.
And I’m fairly certain neither will ever be completely finished.
But they’re mine.
Which is why I keep going.
