FIELD NOTE

HAIRCUT VALIDATED

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a little update on LinkedIn.

I’d been fairly quiet for a while, so I thought it might be useful to explain what I was doing.

Living in a van. Travelling around Europe. Rethinking work. Trying a few things. Not entirely sure where any of it is going.

The usual career update.

I wasn’t quite sure how my professional network would react. Most of these people know me from offices, meetings, projects and the occasional PowerPoint presentation.

Not from living in a Peugeot Boxer somewhere in France.

The response was lovely.

People wished me well, asked questions and seemed genuinely interested in what I was doing.

Someone compared me to Sal Paradise from On the Road.

Which was generous.

I suspect Sal Paradise spent considerably less time looking for a Basic-Fit with suitable parking.

And then there were the comments about my hair.

“Haircut validated.”

“… and a new look!”

Right.

I’d had it cut shorter. Apparently, people noticed.

I’ve spent quite some time reconsidering how I want to live, what kind of work I want to do and where I want to be.

I’ve driven thousands of kilometres, started making videos, built a website and generally created a fairly impressive amount of work for someone who was trying to work less.

And now, after announcing all of that to my professional network, the haircut had received official approval.

I replied that at least one part of the rebrand had been signed off.

Meanwhile, someone requested pictures of the van.

Which is fair. I’d probably want to see it too.

So there we are.

The future is still a little unclear.

But the hair is sorted.
