FIELD NOTE

THE VALUE OF THREE HOURS

Before leaving Belgium, Petal needed a visit to the garage.

Nothing dramatic. Just a few things to check before her technical inspection.

Made an appointment. Drove there. Waited.

Three hours.

Paid the bill. Went for the inspection.

Failed.

Apparently, the garage hadn’t properly checked what it was supposed to check.

Excellent.

Back to the garage. Another appointment. Another inspection.

Lovely little administrative tour of Belgium.

Now, I realise my schedule is somewhat unconventional these days.

I live in a van. I write things. I make videos. I look for work. Occasionally I spend an entire morning deciding where to park.

I have time.

Or at least, that’s what it looks like.

But does having more time mean my time is worth less?

When I had an office to get back to, three hours wasted would have been a problem. Now, apparently, it’s just three hours.

Except those were still my three hours.

I could have worked. Gone for a walk. Had coffee with someone. Done absolutely nothing.

All perfectly acceptable.

Instead, I spent them waiting for something that apparently wasn’t done properly.

And paid for the privilege.

Of course I complained.

I had three hours. 🙂
